The string players are required to tap strings with sections of dowel rod near the start - full instructions are given with the score.
Programme note:
This piece takes as its theme part of a speech by the concentration camp survivor Elie Weisel, made at the World Expo in Seville in 1992. He said "Certainly, all life ends in night, but your mission is to illuminate it." It builds up from the early fragmentary material to a dramatic climax.
