Composer: Alan Taylor
Title: Cold Eye
Instrumentation: Fl, ob, cl, hn, tmb, strings, perc
- other combinations of instruments are possible
Duration: 11 minutes
Difficulty: Moderate

Recording: Ensamble Rosario, Argentina, 2003

Technical Issues:

The piece contains some sections in free time, and others which require the conductor to cue chords after momentary pauses. Otherwise it is straightforward, though the ability to count bars rest is important. The percussion required is: marimba, tam-tam, small gong, suspended cymbal, snare drum, floor tom. This may work best with 2 players, but can be managed by one.

Programme note:

W.B. Yeats requested that the following words be cut on his tomstone:

"Cast a cold eye
on life, on death.
Horseman, pass by!
