Composer: Jennifer Fowler Title: Lament, for clarinet trio Instrumentation: 2 Bb clarinets, Bass clarinet Duration: 8 minutes Difficulty: Moderate to difficult Technical Issues: The piece is slow moving, with constantly changing time signatures and lengths of beat. Good co-ordination between the players will be needed. Programme note: Jennifer Fowler has worked as a freelance composer in London for 30 years, but was born in Australia and has also studied in the Netherlands. She has won international prizes, and had works performed at the I.S.C.M. World Music Days. Lament was written in response to the death of a friend. She says of the piece: "In this piece I wanted to spin a long line of wordless lamentation. I was aiming to explore what one could say within quite strict limitations: spinning out a few notes at a time; twisting and turning; keeping up a sense of momentum and a sense of progression. Underneath, the bleak intervals of 4ths and 5ths at cadence points are used to underpin the line, but also to unsettle it with uneasy independent movement."
