Composer: Edward Conway Title: Seascape Instrumentation: 3 Bb clarinets, Bass Clarinet Duration: 4 minutes Difficulty: Very tricky off-beat rhythms cutting across one another, and a conductor may be needed. Programme note: The title, Seascape, is somewhat misleading, for this piece is bound to disappoint those anticipating tempestuous seas and the like. The starting point for the piece recalls a childhood memory: The haunting cadence of foghorns in the Bristol channel, now sadly silenced, which, when tucked into a warm bed, was oddly comforting. This sound permeates the entire piece, sometimes on the surface, at other points submerged. In the central sections other music comes to the fore, like the fleeting, yet strangely vivid flashes of recollection that sometimes crowd in before sleep. This piece is, then, a kind of maritime lullaby; a homage, also, to a place that for me has always been dark, mysterious and still. Availability:From the composer |
