Composer: William Alexander Title: Salpinx Quartet Instrumentation: 3 Bb clarinets, bass clarinet Duration: 6 minutes Difficulty: Moderate Programme note: This brief work was conceived for a talented school group and includes passages with a somewhat jazzy flavor, passages in 5/8 time and passages which seem to be atonal, but everyone comes out on an E major (for clarinets) chord in 4/4 at the end. The title of the work, "Salpinx" is a Greek word for an ancient trumpet and I chose that name because of several figures used which might be considered appropriate for a brass ensemble, although the music as a whole is more suitable for woodwinds.
