Composer: John Hawkes Title: Aspen Light Instrumentation: 3 Bb clarinets, bass clarinet Duration: 6 minutes Difficulty: Harder Programme note: In the Spring of 1996 I visited Jasper in the Canadian Rockies. The mountain-sides thereabouts were mainly covered by green conifers, but mixed in were small areas of aspen which presented a striking contrast. When seen from a distance the light coloured trunks seemed to fuse together to present a shimmering 'other worldly' look. In 'Aspen Light' this contrast is mirrored by that between rather aggressive, rhythmic, sections which alternate with much slower, more enigmatic, ones. Availability:the composer |
