Composer: Janet Davey Title: Communique 1 - based on a Ugandan folk song Instrumentation: 3 Cls, BCl Duration: 5 mins. Difficulty: First part - good amateur. Remaining parts - moderate amateur Technical Issues: Some special effects called for in the opening and closing solos. Programme note: Communique 1 is a direct statement of exuberance and passion. The opening clarinet solo is questioning, and heralds the main theme, enticing other players to be swept along with uninhibited joy. The quartet was inspired by a brief meeting with Rose Mbowa, a charismatic Ugandan Professor of Music, Dance, and Drama. She uses her expertise with unashamed enthusiasm, in AIDS prevention programmes in rural villages of Uganda. The piece was performed by the London Chamber Group at BMIC in December 1997, and at the Bromley Festival in 1998. Availability: from the composer |
