Composer: Andrew Melvin Title: Marche Futile Instrumentation: Scored for Fl Ob Cl Bsn Hn Vln Vla Vlc, and can be played with solo instruments or by larger groups. Duration: 8 minutes Difficulty: Moderate to good amateur Technical Issues: Some tricky rhythms and exposed solos for some instruments, and players are required to stamp and tap with their feet. Great fun for the players as well as audiences. Programme note: March Futile is the "Dad's Army" of marches. It is a piece in which the strong sense of purpose inherent in marching is matched by an equally strong sense of purposelessness. The piece is purposefully dedicated to the members of COMA. It was shortlisted for the 1997 State of the Nation event at the South Bank Centre in London, premiered there, and has been performed since by COMA and by the London Chamber Group in December 1997.
