Composer: Alan Taylor Title: Against the Tide of Darkness Instrumentation: This piece is for flexible four part orchestra, with optional percussion. The orchestra should be as large as possible. The four parts can accommodate all standard orchestral instruments, and saxophones. Duration: 8 minutes Difficulty: Moderate amateur, but some confident players needed for brief solos Recording: MIDI Realisation Technical Issues: A confident conductor will be needed Programme note: The piece starts very slowly, with a simple theme, and a choral development of this, repeated a number of times, interrupted by loud frantic scampering, and with the tempo gradually rising. It then speeds up dramatically, moving into a long passage of intensely rhythmic music. The process is repeated, with a shorter slow section, and an even more rapidly pulsating fast section. There is a slow and very quiet conclusion. The piece was premiered by Birmingham COMA in 1999.
