Composer: Alan Taylor Title: A fine October day in the garden, and other simple pleasures Instrumentation: The full range of orchestral wind, brass, and string instruments (except the very low pitched ones) are specified, but the piece can be performed by almost any combination of these as long as there are a number of wind or brass instruments, and a number of string instruments Duration: 8 minutes Difficulty: Basic amateur Technical Issues: Players are required to play short phrases at moments which they judge appropriate, and to add or subtract notes from these phrases each time they play. The main challenge for players will be to remember how many times they have played, and to remember what variation of the their phrase they played the previous time they entered. Programme note: The piece was provoked by an improvised piece written by a friend, combined with attending a concert of music by Takemitsu. The London COMA ensemble performed the piece.
