Composer: Jerry Wigens Title: Quartet Instrumentation: Flexible - four melody lines Duration:5 minutes Difficulty: Moderate Programme note: This idea for this piece came from a riff I had originally written for double bass and guitar. I thought it would be interesting to discard the guitar part and devise an arrangement whereby the essential harmony was retained but spread between three instruments with the bass part played by a fourth instrument and remaining reasonably intact. The use of indeterminate pitches to begin the piece is a kind of acknowledgement to the rhythmic model of Steve Reich's Clapping Music which must have been working on me subliminally when the bass and guitar riff was first conceived. Rhythm and counterpoint are the principal features I have tried to develop in the piece. Availability:from the composer |
