Composer: Mervyn MacKee Title: Westminster Instrumentation: Flexible - four melody lines Duration:5 minutes Difficulty: Easier Programme note: Westminster was written in late 2003 after a visit to the London Chamber Group Piece of the Year competition at the George Inn. The piece is meant to capture the view of a late 19th Century London from a high vantage point. As one scans the horizon one can hear distant church bells and watch the comings and goings of dignitaries in the busy city. All this is boxed up in a contemporary 'flexible scoring' wrapper for Strings or Wind. Every player has something to say and each instrument is the leader at one time or another. This was a great deal of fun to write and I hope equally enjoyable to play by Strings and Winds alike. The String Quartet version has been performed by the Hingham String Ensemble (near Boston, Massachusetts) in which Mervyn McKee plays the Viola. Availability:from the composer |
