Composer:
Alun Grafton
Title:
Praelaudium
Instrumentation:

Flexible - four melody lines

Duration:

Difficulty:
Moderate
Programme note:

This piece was written in 1999 and is an arrangement of the first movement of 'Triptych' for string orchestra, completed in 1997. The arrangement was particularly aimed at a youth or amateur ensemble, and as such was first performed by the school orchestra of Eagle House School in July 1999.

This is an abstract work and is in no way descriptive of anything. It is in ternary form with a short coda and lasts six minutes. The first theme is basically a scale in D but it can not make up its mind if it is D major or minor. The second theme is in B minor and is based on the theme tune to the 1980Ős mini TV serial called 'Codename Kyril'. In this piece the theme tune is written in three beats to the bar. Counter melodies appear around the main tune that develops this section until the first tune makes its reappearance. The coda is very short using a whole tone scale starting on D.
