Composer:
William Alexander
Title:
Mimicries
Instrumentation:

Flexible - four melody lines

Duration:

Difficulty:
Harder
Programme note:

There is much imitation among all voices in this work, hence the title. In structure it is a modified rondo, with contrasting rhythmic and lyrical sections. The challenge of the composition was obvious: each voice must be playable by three or four different instruments. Phrasing was a problem in that string and wind players phrase differently. This resulted in some long phrases being divided into shorter groupings. Articulation in wind instruments is different from strings, leading to compromises in some short passages. But it was fun to write and that is important to a composer.
