Composer: Alan Taylor Title: Chorale, melodies, and interruptions Instrumentation: A minimum of twelve melody instruments, with a good balance of pitch ranges, percussion, and piano. Duration: 8 minutes Difficulty: Easy Technical Issues: The orchestra or ensemble is divided into three groups of players of melody instruments. Each group should have a balance of soprano, alto, tenor, and bass instruments - although the pitch ranges in the different groups will lead to some differences of timbre between the groups. A drum kit is needed or, alternatively, a deeply pitched drum and a number of other percussion instruments such as snare drum and cymbal. A piano or keyboard is essential. The conductor will need to conduct some sections conventionally, but in other sections or bars should cue particular events as indicated. Programme note:The piece was written for the COMA East Midlands Ensemble during 1999 and 2000, and I am grateful to them for playing through the first draft in a rehearsal. The lessons which I learned in that rehearsal were essential to the completion of the piece. The piece consists of a number of simple elements, each of which goes through a process of change as the piece progresses. there is little interaction between the elements.
