Composer: Al Summers Title: So Fine Instrumentation: Flexible - four melody lines Difficulty:Moderate Programme note: So Fine was conceived as a quasi-choral piece based on a single line of harmony (just 4 chords) from the Rod Stewart song Maggie May, to be played by any number of players with a minimum of 4. The first, and main, part has subtle shifts building to a subdued 'climax'. A central section allows the players to improvise & take the subtle shifts of the first part a little further if they wish. There is then a scored pause (which may finish the piece), followed by an optional coda where the original harmonic run is tortured before resting. The piece may be thought of in several ways: a recurring dream; a thought process, struggling with a single awkward, simple but elusive concept; a group of people ironing out (and accepting) their differences. Or maybe it's just one of those irritating moments when you can't get a bit of a tune out of your head...! Availability:from the composer |
