Composer: Brian Mayall Title: Second Chance Instrumentation: Flexible - four melody lines Difficulty:Moderate Programme note: The piece is entitled "Second Chance" as this my second attempt at this competition. It is approximately 6 and a half minutes in length and has neither been published nor previously performed. At its inception in 1997, the piece was scored for Flute, Violin, Clarinet and Cello but as it progressed it was re-scored it for Octet (strings and woodwind). On editing the piece for submission for the LCG 2004 Call for Pieces, I reduce both the length and resources required. All the material heard in the piece is derived from the opening phrase, which involves the resolution of dissonant, broken chords. The piece continues in sonata form with the exposition of contrasting themes before leading to the development section, which is intended to imply a slow ?movement?; this effect is achieved by doubling the length of the notes. Finally, the original themes return followed by a short coda. Availability:from the composer |
