Composer: Alan Taylor Title: Aftershocks Instrumentation: 4 part flexible ensemble, and percussion Duration: 4 minutes Difficulty: Moderate Recording: MIDI Realisation Technical Issues: The piece could be instrumented in a wide variety of ways, but a good arrangement would be flutes, violins, and oboes on the Soprano line, clarinets, trumpets, and violins on the Alto line, violas, alto and tenor saxophones, and horns on the Tenor line, and cellos, bassoons, bass clarinets, tubas, trombones, and baritone saxophones on the Bass line. Ideally, four percussionists are needed, but the part could be played by one. If more than one player plays the drum part, then it is likely that the drum beats may not be exactly together. This is intended. Suitable drums would be tom-toms, from floor tom upwards, or a small bass drum and snare drums of different sizes with the snares switched off, or some combination of these. Programme note:The piece is not descriptive of the aftershocks experienced following earthquakes, although the choice of title was prompted by earthquakes, and people's reaction to the aftershocks, in El Salvador in the early part of 2001. Rather it refers to the nervous reaction suffered by people who have faced extremely stressful or shocking events, and their tendency to over-react to less serious events of the same kind, as if the horror had returned.
