Composer: Alan Taylor Title: On Learning of the Death of Alfred Schnittke Instrumentation: Two pianists on one piano, four flexibly scored orchestral lines. Duration: 6 minutes Difficulty: Piano - moderate amateurs, though could be done by basic players if four players on two pianos used. Orchestral lines - basic amateur.
Recording: Long ostinato motif in the piano, otherwise very easy. Programme note: Alfred Schnittke died in August 1998, not long after I had first heard his Piano Concerto, and simultaneously been asked to write a piece for North East New Music - a group with a variety of players, including two pianists. The ideas for the piece fell into place imediately, and I woke in the middle of one night with most of the piece in my head, having to get up to write it down - it has changed little since then. In form, it is a simple elegy. Availability: from Alan Taylor or from his SibeliusMusic home page where you can view, play, and print the score. |
