Composer: Robert A. Howard Title: Promenade IV Instrumentation: Flexible - four musical lines. Duration: 3 minutes Difficulty: Easy Technical Issues: Good attention to dynamics essential. The piece may be played by quartet or by a larger ensemble. The musical lines are all playable on a variety of instruments. Programme note: Promenade takes its title from a group of five large sculptures by Anthony Caro (1996). This set of steel constructions is currently on display in the Yorkshire Sculpture Park. I have derived musical material and structure from the contours and form of the sculptures. Promenade IV is flexibly scored for any instrumental combination in four parts. It is the fourth in a series of pieces based on Caro's work. The previous three versions of Promenade were written for a large orchestra (Goldsmiths Sinfonia), a small instrumental ensemble (Gemini) and a large mixed-ensemble (Contemporary Music Making for Amateurs - COMA).
