Composer: Colin Johnson Title: With Artistic Clout! Instrumentation: Four flexible lines Duration: 3 minutes Difficulty: Moderate Technical Issues: There are wide leaps in the parts, and some vigourous rhythms, but each of these repeat, and piece is not hard once they have been learnt. Programme note: An early version of this piece was written in the summer of 1996. This version dates from December 1997. The piece is designed to be played by any group of pitched instruments, divided into 4 groups (two "high'' and two "bass'' groups) together with a piano. The piece was runner-up in the call for pieces for the 1998 "State of the Nation" festival at the South Bank Centre, and received its premiere at the 1998 Oxford Contemporary Music Festival.
There isn't really a theme, programme, or idea behind the piece. It comes from piano improvisations, errors made in attempting to write down those improvisations, and riffs stolen from early 1990's dance music. The title is the fault of Howard Jones, who during a meeting at the time I was writing the piece talked about the need to get some "people with artistic clout'" behind a project.
