Composer: John Adams Title: John Philip Sousa Instrumentation: Entirely flexible Duration: 7 and a half minutes Difficulty: Good amateur Technical Issues: The piece consists of a single line of notes, not on a stave. Performers start together, very rhythmically, but due to the lack of bar lines or other landmarks they become out of step with one another, and chaos ensues. Programme note: The piece is one of a series taking apart great monuments in the American musical tradition. |
