Composer: Alan Taylor Title: Tedious Progress? Instrumentation: Eight flexibly scored parts Duration: 7 and a half minutes Difficulty: Basic amateur Technical Issues: There is not a quaver to be seen, a steady unvarying tempo and time signature, no key signature (transposing instruments excepted), and no accidentals. The orchestra is divided into a wind group (3 parts) a string group (3 parts), and a brass/lower wind group (2 parts). A variety of instrumental substitutions are possible. Programme note: This piece was written for the Newbury College Late Starters Orchestra. The piece uses two secundal chords, which together give a D minor-ish feel to the piece, and a simple three note motif, to create a sense of plodding on, enduring, and nearly screaming at times. The piece was premiered by the orchestra for which it was written in April 1998, and performed at the COMA Summer School in 1998. Availability: from Orinana or from Alan Taylor |
