Composer: Alan Taylor Title: More in Anger than in Sorrow Instrumentation: Flexible instrumentation and in size from five players upwards. 4 or more treble instruments, 1 or more tenor or bass instruments, are required. Duration: 5 minutes Difficulty: Moderate amateur Recording: MIDI Realisation Technical Issues: There are eight parts, three of which could be omitted if too few instruments are available. While the instrumentation is flexible, contrasts of timbre are retained by dividing the instruments into three separate groups. Players will need to follow the beat carefully to make the numerous off-beat entries acurately. Will need a conductor to maintain ensemble. Programme note: Two treble groups play antiphonally, exploring fragments of short agitated ideas, and fragments of a melody. The third group play two parallel bass lines consisting of fragments of a passacaglia-like theme. After a series of increasingly intense climaxes, the music halts, and resumes slowly and quietly, playing the melody in four different versions, and the complete passacaglia. The piece was originally written for the South Region COMA wind ensemble, and was shortlisted and performed by COMA for the Oxford Festival in 1998. It was performed by COMA East Midlands in June 1998, and by the London Chamber Group in November 1998. Availability: from Alan Taylor |
