With the exception of the second movement, in which long-held pitches predominate, much of the music consists of fragmentary material.
Programme note:
The piece was commissioned for the Chamber Music Exchange by Thalia Myers. Pietro is a carpenter in Italo Calvino's short story 'The Cloven Viscount'. He makes beautiful, intricate mechanisms that are of no use whatever.
