Programme note:

A recorder playing friend, Jeanette Hajncl, asked me to write a piece for her in August 1999. At the time a violent struggle was taking place in East Timor, culminating in the people voting for independence in the face of murderous provocation. This was followed by the despoliation of the country by the occupying forces, but finally by their withdrawal. I felt I could not ignore this struggle for democracy against repressive violence. While the piece is not descriptive, the three movements represent a response to this successful struggle. The piece was subsequently re-written for mixed sextet.

Recorder version:

In the original version for recorder and piano, the recorder player will need sopranino, descant, treble, and tenor recorders. In the first movement they play the descant and treble simultaneously throughout, using notes fingered wholly on the top half of the instruments.
