Composer: Ann Hoban Title: Chamber Cello Concerto Instrumentation: Cello and Winds Duration: 12 minutes Difficulty: Good amateur/professional Technical Issues: Tricky rhythms, and a need to maintain an insistent tempo. Programme note: Ann Hoban recently completed her studies at Huddersfield University, and has been awarded a Composer/Apprenticeship scheme place by the Irish Arts Council. She was a finalist in both 1994 and 1996 in the Irish "Young Composer of the Year" competition. She has had an orchestral piece performed by the RTE Symphony Orchestra, and broadcast, and a number of other pieces performed in festivals. The Chamber Cello Concerto, like much of her work, is influenced by baroque music. It has not been written in response to any picture or poem, and reflects her attitude to writing 'Absolute Music'. Ideas are not 'developed', but rather looked at in different ways. There are two climaxes, which are intended to be 'over the top'. The theme of the piece is 'stubbomess'. It was performed by the London Chamber Group in December 1997. Availability: the Irish Music Information Centre |
