The piece takes its title from a poem by the Italian poet, Eugenio Montale. the poem is entitled "The Sunflower". The poem expresses the Montale's attachment to the landscape of his youth, on the coast near Genoa, with burning light and salt spray on rocks, using the sunflower as a metaphor for attraction to the light. It concludes with the words "feeding on the light".
