Composer: John Hawkes Title: Toeing the line II Instrumentation: Flute, violin, cello, clarinet Duration: 5 minutes Difficulty: Moderate Programme note: 'Toeing the line II' is an adaptation for flute, clarinet, violin and cello of a previous work ('Toeing the line') which was written early in 1998. The title refers, rather obliquely, to the fact that most of the techniques employed in writing the various sections of the piece involved the construction of a single musical 'line' which is followed, more or less, by all four instrumentalists. There are four main sections (fast-slow-fast-slow) followed by a short coda. In both slow sections the players are allowed a certain amount of freedom in their playing.
