Composer: Alan Taylor Title: Shot in the Foot Instrumentation: Percussion ensemble - either four skilled percussionists, or a large group of less skilled players Duration: 7 minutes Difficulty: Moderate for a larger group, harder for 4 players Technical Issues: The piece requires four sets of 'clonky' percussion, three 'real life/traffic' sounds, and a starting pistol (real if preferred). Suggested instruments are set out in the score. Other instruments may be substituted if these are not available. The piece may be performed by four experienced percussionists, or by a larger ensemble. The parts could be divided up with one player per instrument. The players performing on the instruments in each part would need to stand together as a group. The 'shooting' events would need adapting if the piece was played by a larger group. A machine gun might come in handy. Recording:Brake Drum Assembly The recording, of course, does not convey the theatrical aspects of the piece - there is action in the silences. Programme note: The piece was performed by the Brake Drum Assembly at the All Ears Contemporary Music festival, London, September 2005. It is good fun, quite tasteless, and goes much too far.
