Composer: Lucia Dunbar Title: Little Suite Instrumentation: fl, vln, cl, vlc Duration: 5 minutes Difficulty: Moderate Programme note: This suite comprises four miniatures. 'Circulation' focuses on repeated melodic and rhythmical patterns pushed around the ensemble, with texture changes interrupting the flow. 'Between two' is squeezed between two of everything: dissonant or consonant chords, triplets or duplets, duple or triple time. Tense and tight, fortunately it does not last long. 'The bamboo fence' has regular chords, like posts, and twine weaves through them. Despite its pretty appearance, it is a device to keep intruders out as the violin realises when it tries to fit in. Finally, in 'The spanner', each instrument is given its own phrase, which it repeats ceaselessly. How boring life would be if unexpected events did not occasionally throw a spanner in the works ! This suite was written specifically for the London Chamber Group in response to the Piece of the Year 2003 Competition. Availability:the composer |
