Composer: Barnaby Byron Title: Al Rakis Instrumentation: Flute, Violin, Clarinet, Cello Duration: 6 minutes Programme note: The idea for the piece was produced several years ago on an old synthesiser using various Arabian sounds. Al Rakis is a star in the constellation of Draco, whose Arabic name translates as The Dancer. This seemed to fit the nature of the piece. This is my first attempt to write for a quartet and the tune for Al Rakis seemed an ideal choice. The piece has lost much of its Arabic nature but has gained much too in its new format. I tried to make it short and interesting with one or two surprises and a fairly abrupt ending. Passing the tune between different instruments without making the joins too difficult or awkward was the major challenge. Availability:the composer |
