Composer: Pat Livingstone Title: Freefall Instrumentation: for string quartet, recorder trio, hair dryer, and gurgle tube Duration: 5 minutes Difficulty: Easy Technical Issues: The string parts are not demanding, but care will be needed to ensure co-ordination between the instruments. Programme note: This piece works with two contrasting textures, the noise of the hairdryer and gurgle tube on the one hand, and the strings and recorders on the other. The recorder parts are low pitched to match the tone quality of the string parts. In the opening section the recorders play in quarter tones. After the entry of the hairdryer there is a short sustained passage followed by a brief section just for recorders. This is followed by a rhythmic section where individual notes become increasingly sustained. The final section is a series of overlapping chords with some movement in the top treble recorder part. The image of Freefall was suggested by the notion of jumping out into your own fears. Availability: from the composer |
