Composer: Timothy Blinko Title: Montage Instrumentation: String quartet Duration: 2 minutes Difficulty: Harder Technical Issues: The piece is fast throughout, and is marked 'Allegro volante, with momentum'. There are time signatures changes nearly every bar at the start, then a longer passage in 8/8, before a return to the opening pattern. Programme note: In the art form of photo-montage, an image is assembled from a mosaic of separate photographs taken from many angles, creating subtle fracturings and transformations of the original. This work explores the idea of photo-montage in musical terms, with a series of related fragments of music undergoing small-scale transformations in order to create a larger picture.
