Composer: Christopher Woodley Title: The turning of the year Instrumentation: fl, vln, vln, vla, vlc Duration: 4 minutes Difficulty: Moderate Programme note: The Turning of The Year is a picture postcard of the view from the window of the room where it was written. The location is on the Weald of Kent. As the title suggest, the time of year is winter, when, according to Tippett (A Child of Our Time), the world turns on its dark side. The scene is one of sheep grazing in an old apple orchard. There are Blackbirds and Robins darting about, in a knowing sort of way. Squawking Magpies and the odd grunt from a stray Jay. All perfectly in keeping with a wealden scene. There are also the telephone lines and the power cables - and the Squirrels scurrying from cable to conifer. All perfectly in keeping with a wealden scene. The is dedicated to Ruth, who doesn't see the view as often as we would like. Availability:the composer |
