Composer: Robert Kritz Title: Lyric Piece Instrumentation: cl, vln, vln, vla, vlc Duration: 7 minutes Difficulty: Moderate Programme note: In the music, I try to express my feelings on returning from service in World War 2. There was sadness for the lost lives of my close buddies, exuberance that the war was over, but great uncertainty about the future. These wide mood swings alternate throughout the piece and culminate in a rhapsodic plea for each of us to reach out and "connect" with our fellow humans. Now, 57 years later, these feelings -- especially the sadness for the lost lives and the concerns about the future -- are still vivid, and, sadly, still relevant. The melodic content is essentially tonal, although often ambiguously so, with the melodies singing lyrically and clearly over a contemporary but accessible harmonic fabric.
