Composer:
Neil Gardner
Title:
Four String Quartets of Progressive Difficully
Instrumentation:
2 Vln, Vla, Vlc
Duration:
12 minutes
Difficulty:
Moderate to good amateur
Technical Issues:
Each of these quartets has the conventional three movement form, but lasts only for a few moments. They were written to give amateur players of varying standards a taste of the treasures in the string quartet repertoire. The style is intentionally varied, and the aim has been to provide music which is enjoyable to play and accessible to the listener.
Programme note:
These four quartets represent a musical journey, not only in technical difficulty, but in musical language. Neil Gardner is largely self taught in composition, having worked in government service at home and abroad. He gained the Performer's LRAM in piano. and has also studied violin and viola. He was awarded the Gold Cup for Piano Composition in the first Cheltenham Festival. His pieces have been broadcast in several countries, and his concerto for oboe and strings was performed at the South Bank. The Four Quartets were performed by the London Chamber Group at the Conway Hall in June 1998, and at the Docklands Festival in the same year.
