Composer: Simon Speare Title: Crowding In Instrumentation: String quartet Duration: 11 minutes Difficulty: Good amateur Technical Issues: Good ensemble needed Programme note: This quartet was commissioned by the London Chamber Group with funds from the Arts for Everyone scheme, and performed by them in November 1998. Simon Speare has had pieces performed by the Bingham String Quartet, and the City of London Sinfonia, among others. He studied with Simon Holt, and is Composer in Association with the London Concert Choir. Simon comments: "I was determined to write a piece with a depth of musical thought which would reveal itself through exploratory rehearsals. Technically there may be differences between amateur and professional musicians, but intellectually there are none. I wanted to exploit this fact. My working title, Tones, Semitones and the Spaces in between was unwieldy. Crowding In seemed to me to convey the density of the piece, and also suggested a social aim - this is music for everyone."
