Composer:
Howard Jones
Title:
Intermezzo
Instrumentation:
String Quartet
Duration:
5 minutes
Difficulty:
Moderate to good amateur
Technical Issues:
A repeated rhythmic figure which occurs at the start and end of the piece holds it together. Soloistic passages in between are a little harder.
Programme note:

Intermezzo was written in 1995 in response to a request from a friend of the composer for a piece to be played during a wedding ceremony, where it duly received its first performance. As befits such an occasion, the music is quiet and meditative, with flowing melodies, gentle rhythms and rich, bittersweet, harmonies. The piece was performed by the London Chamber Group at the Conway Hall in May 1999, and again at the Bromley Festival in June 1999.

Howard Jones was born in 1948 and studied composition, horn, and piano at Birmingham and Cambridge. As well as composing and arranging music of all kinds, he has worked as a freelance performer, teacher, and accompanist, and was for 10 years the conductor of the Kent-based Grosvenor Orchestra.
