Composer: Alan Taylor Title: A Rather Tired Duet Instrumentation: 2 violas, or 2 violins, of viola and violin, or larger ensemble of violas and violins Duration: 3 minutes Difficulty: Easy to moderate Recording: MIDI Realisation Technical Issues: The piece has two lines, which are equally important, and cross repeatedly. It was originally written for two solo violas, but may be played on violins, or on a mixed ensemble of both instruments rather than as a duet. It contains some treble clef passages for viola, but these are easy. Both lines contain natural harmonics. Programme note: Two viola playing friends were complaining about the lack of music for their instruments, and asked me to write a piece for them. The piece which resulted is conversational in style, exploring the communication between the two similar instruments. The piece was subsequently adapted for mixed violin and viola ensemble, and has been played by the City Lit String Ensemble in London.
