Composer: Pat Livingstone Title: Move-meant Instrumentation: Cello Duration: 12 minutes Difficulty: Harder Programme note: This work was written in 2001 as part of a project by Forum London Composers' Group to produce solos and duets. The first and fourth movements are roughly equal in length with the the 2 middle movements being much shorter and less dense in texture and content. The 1st movement opens with a fanfare before moving to an extended quaver passage gradually interspersing some of the material from the fanfare. Pizzicato sections and a few bars where the cellist is required to tap the instrument mark the middle section followed by an extended arco section, slowing to a short passage using double stops before reducing to a relaxed melodic coda. The slow 2nd movement exploits the use of glissandi and 'silent' fingering. The slow 3rd movement opens with more rocking double-stopping moving to a short scale passage based on material from the 1st movement, a few bars of triple stopping and a short final summing up of the material. The 4th movement opens with an 80 bar energetic melody using repeated notes, broken chords and a chromatic melody. The middle section uses pizzicato and different types of 'body hits' - using different parts of the cello's body - finger and nail hits, knuckles and drumming with fingers. The final section elaborates material from the first and second sections closing with rocking chords. Availability:From the composer |
