Composer: Alan Taylor Title: To The Edge Instrumentation: Concert wind band - Pic, 3 fls, 2 obs, CA, Eb Cl, 4 Bb Cls, Alto Cl, Bass Cl, Contra Bass Cl, Sop Sax, 2 Alto Sax, Ten Sax, Bari Sax, 2 Bsns, 4 Hrns, 4 Trpts, 2 Tbns, Bass Tbn, Euph, Tuba, Timps, 2 tuned perc, 2 untuned perc. Some instrumental substitutions are possible. Duration: 10 minutes Difficulty: Moderate Recording: MIDI recording Technical Issues: The tempo is extremely slow, and the music is very sparse to start with, and so good counting skills will be required. The ensemble is divided into eight groups of five instruments. The performance would be more effective if the members of the groups were seated together, with some spacial separation between them. Programme note: The piece takes a series of simple musical ideas, presented very quietly at first as isolated fragments, and develops them to the edge of their potentialities. The piece was selected by Trinity College of Music, London following a call for 40-line concert band pieces, and was performed by them in 2005. Availability: from Alan Taylor or from his SibeliusMusic home page where you can view, play, and print the score. |
