Composer: Sally Davies Title: Brass Tracts Instrumentation: Brass quintet - 2 tpt, hn, tmb, tuba Duration: 4 minutes Difficulty: Easy Technical Issues: The piece was written specifically for performance at the British Library, and requires a building with a similar capacity for placing the musians at appropriate points in order to achieve it effect Programme note: This piece was inspired by the interior architecture of the British Library, by the theatrical potential of its design. Trumpets open with a call and response fanfare thrown from balcony to balcony across the king's Library. The players later stand one above the other on the three circular landings of the spiral staircase playing parallel chords which move up and down in steps. Never having taken Gerald Hoffnung up on his irreverent invitation to 'try the famous echo in the Reading Room of the (old) British Library', Sally is delighted to have permission to exploit the acoustics and setting of the wonderful open public space of the New British Library. Sally Davies has been working as a composer, music director and performer mostly within the dance and theatre world for the last ten years. She has written scores for a great variety of unusual and multi-ethnic ensembles although a recent commission was for full brass band. Availability:from the composer |
