Composer: Robert A. Howard Title: Promenade V (2000) Instrumentation: Oboe Duration: 5 minutes Difficulty: Harder Programme note: Promenade V is the fifth and last in a series of pieces based on the set of five large steel sculptures by Anthony Caro (1996). Caro's Promenade constructions are currently on display in the Yorkshire Sculpture Park. Promenade V is flexibly scored for a solo treble clef instrument. The piece explores irregular rhythms and highly chromatic pitch material, having derived more general musical shape from the contours of the aforementioned sculptures. The previous four versions of Promenade were written for a large orchestra (Goldsmiths Sinfonia), a small instrumental ensemble (Gemini), a large mixed-ensemble (COMA national ensemble) and a 'scratch' orchestra (The Prommers' Orchestra of the Royal Albert Hall).
