Composer: Liz Sharma Title: Saxophone Quartet Instrumentation: Soprano, alto, tenor, and baritone saxes Duration: 5 minutes Difficulty: Moderate to harder Programme note: This piece was originally written for a competition, in which a saxophone quartet sought new works. It was one of three they liked enough to record, although it was not the one eventually performed. When I heard the recording, I planned to change certain sections, but the pressure of tough teaching jobs, freelance work & some book writing commissions meant it was forgotten. In the Summer of 2000 I began to compose new works, and to review earlier compositions. I rewrote the first & last movements, in the light of experience, as by this time I played the saxophone. The aim is merely to produce 4 contrasting movements which explore the range & timbre of saxophones. I wrote what I thought sounded good, & whether or not I succeeded is for you to decide. This is the first performance of this work. The four movements are; Prelude, Promenade, Nuances, and Finale. Availability:From the composer |
