Programme note:
Michael Torke was born in Wisconsin in 1961 and was studying piano and composing by the age of five. His music has been described as "some of the most optimistic, joyful and thoroughly uplifting music to appear in recent years" (Gramophone, August 1996) and these qualities are amply demonstrated in his saxophone quartet "July", which was commissioned by the Apollo Saxophone Quartet. It was first performed by them at Cardiff Bay in 1995. With regard to this piece and his earlier string quartet "December", Michael Torke explains that "Instead of single-mindedly exploring one color, as in earlier pieces of mine, the music now corresponds to an experience of time - the energy and heat we find in the month of July, as well as cooling breezes of repose that come, perhaps, in the evening." Michael Torke is Associate Composer for the Royal Scottish National Orchestra.
