Composer: Gavin Bryars Title: Three Elegies for Nine Clarinets Instrumentation: 4 Bb clarinets, 2 Altos, 2 Basses, Contra-Bass Duration: 12 minutes Difficulty: Moderate to good amateur. Strong player needed for Bass 1 part. Technical Issues: The Bass 1 part contains a demanding solo in the second part of the piece. The Bb parts require the playing of multiphonics, and several parts include smoothly flowing broken chords. The extensive use of unisons and non-diatonic chords will require good tuning. Programme note: The piece was written for Roger Heaton, who gave the first performance in Basildon in 1994. Performed by the London Chamber Group at the Conway Hall, May 1999.
