Composer: William O Smith Title: Fragments Instrumentation: Bb clarinet Duration: 4 minutes Difficulty: Harder Technical Issues: This piece written in 1977 uses a standard Bb clarinet that is split in two with a mouthpiece used on each half. They are then played either simultaneously by one player or as separate instruments. This creates two instruments which work on different tuning systems with some similar sounds being only microtonally apart. Programme note: The music resulting from this way of playing a clarinet provides an interesting sound world quite different from the Westernised sound of the Clarinet. William O smith is one of the pioneers of extended techniques for clarinet. Availability: The publisher |
