Composer: Janet Davey Title: End Piece Instrumentation: Double wind quintet - 2 fl, 2 ob, 2 cl, 2 hn, 2 bsn, and tape Duration: 8 minutes Difficulty: Easy to moderate Technical Issues: The performers are required to start stop-watches at the beginning of the piece in order to play in exact synchronisation with the tape. One quintet need to be in the same room as the audience, and the other outside the room, but audible to the audience. Programme note: "As our mental eye penetrates into smaller and smaller distances and shorter and shorter times, we find nature behaving so entirely differently from what we observe in visible and palpable bodies of our surroundings, that no model shaped after our large scale experiences can ever be "true"........" The stimulus for End Piece largely comes from the experience of visiting a elderly close relative in an 'old peoples home' - where those nearing the end of life sit with their memories and thoughts, surrounded by the sounds of daily routine. It is based on a Raga, the tape exponential to reflect the passing of life. An exploration of things on the edge of sound questions the value placed on life. Availability:E-mail the composer |
