Composer: Kathy Hinde Title: 'In Between' Instrumentation: Fl, ob, cl, hn, bsn Duration: 5 minutes Difficulty: Moderate Technical Issues: The pieces consists of sections where specified activities are repeated over a specified period of time, and bars with a regular rhythm. The final section is very fast and needs good rhythmic precision. It is likely to need a conductor. Programme note: 'In Between'explores a limited range of notes by manipulating them in different ways. Sounds are stretched, condensed, and squeezed into tiny spaces. Exaggerated crescendi push past and consume more delicate sounds. Elsewhere, a sound is playfully bounced between two or more instruments, or politely passed around the ensemble. Based in Bath, Kathy works across the areas of visual art and music, combining the two disciplines whenever appropriate. An element common to most of her work is the idea of gradual change: eg. by exploring a small amount of material a number of different times from different angles, or by creating a sculpture that appears to change under different lighting conditions.
